I just wanted to let you know that I fondly think of Dr. Sprinsky very often. He was my professor for one semester; After that, every time I would pass by him as he was smoking his pipe, he would greet me, "Hello Ma'am" to which I would respond, "Hello Sir." There will always be a special place in my heart for that gruff old man.

Matt, Your father's name came into my head for some reason today at work, and I wondered what he was up to. Sadly, I found this. I didn't know he had passed away and so long ago. We served together in the late 1970s/early 1980's as cadre in the Senior ROTC detachments at Clarkson College (he) and St. Lawrence University (me). He was the PMS at Clarkson and I was an assistant PMS and a Captain at St. Lawrence. Your mother and I became good friends since they lived in Canton. I always had a standing invitation to supper when your Dad made his famous liver and onions. I remember when you were born. Please give Lynne my love and know I pray that you both are doing well. Take care.

I knew "Dr" Sprinsky as Colonel Sprinsky during a tour at the Defense Mapping School. He was a professional soldier whose leadership certainly impacted my career and my maturity. As the Mapping NCO on the 8th Army Engineer's staff in 1984, I was assigned to sponsor him during his visit to Korea. He was the same professional then as he had been at Fort Belvoir. We spent some time touring Seoul and its' environs and sharing DMS memories of people and activities and missions.
Go to Google and use "William Sprinsky Colonel". There are many references returned. A tribute to a someone who made a positive difference in my life.

Wow. Thank you so much, again, for sharing this. Your blog became like a "How-To Guide" for how to deal with the death of a parent with compassion, responsibility, strength and grace. I hope it helps your heart to write because you do it very well. And just know that some people (yup, that'd be ME...) may have actually LEARNED something from your experience. Your Dad must be really, really proud of you.

Hi Matt,

I read your post yesterday morning, half-asleep, still in bed, on the iPhone and I was just overwhelmed by how honest and beautiful the words and the photograph were. I did not have time to comment at the time but I wanted to thank you for sharing this with us, it is a very raw and deeply personal piece.

My heart is with you, your mom and the rest of your family.
